Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is solar water heating a viable alternative to gas or electricity?

Solar should be seen as a supplement rather than a complete alternative to gas or electricity. It cannot totally replace utility heating on days with low sunlight. Over a year, a correctly sized solar system can cover 60%-70% of a household's hot water needs. The system can easily be automated to guarantee hot water regardless of sunlight levels.

2. Can the solar collectors be used in cold conditions?

Yes. The collectors can operate in temperatures as low as -30°C, though performance is reduced in extreme environments. Efficient heat output is still maintained in mild sub-zero conditions.

3. What happens if one of the tubes is broken?

Solar tubes are strong and highly impact-resistant, but they can be replaced easily if damaged. They are cost-effective and available through local distributors. The collectors can continue to operate with several broken tubes at reduced efficiency, but immediate replacement is recommended.

4. Will water be heated on a cloudy day?

Yes. While heat output is reduced on overcast days, the collector will still generate heat. On heavily clouded or rainy days, auxiliary gas or electric heating automatically compensates to maintain the desired water temperature.

5. Can I use a solar collector with my existing hot water system?

Yes. Retrofit valves can be used to connect the solar system directly to your existing cold water inlet. If direct configuration isn't possible, an additional pre-heating storage tank can be installed prior to the water entering your current tank.

6. Can the solar collectors be mounted on a flat surface?

Yes. They can be installed on flat roofs or ground level using a stainless steel flat roof frame. A minimum mounting angle of 20 degrees is required to ensure optimal heat pipe performance.
